the Utne Independent Press Award

Hello to the handful of people reading our blog

Hopefully you have also taken some time to read the Moonlight Chronicles, our hobo friend, traveler, and now carbon zeroed Dan Price's travel journal and zine. We got good news last week that the Moonlight Chronicles was once again nominated for a 2007 Unte Independent Press Award!

Congrats to Dan who has been sharing his tales of travel, insight, obervation, and joy through the Chronicles for the past 16 years. He has also written several books too!

Also - keep a lookout for issue 60  which will be at a local footwear retailer, or hit dan up for a copy at his website.

a practical tip to lighten your dry cleaning impact

I hope everyone had a good weekend. While watching the Cleveland/Boston Play game, i was poking around in the abundance of e-mails from "groups" i have either signed petitions with or donated money and thought you all might enjoy this from Co-Op America, which Simple is also a member.

"Resources: Know Your Options for Green Dry Cleaning

shirts on hangers

If you are like many Americans, you're bound to have a few items around the house that can't be laundered in the weekly wash. And while you may have detected the faint whiff of chemicals when you picked up your freshly dry cleaned sweater last week, perhaps you didn't think much of it. But it's something to be concerned about.

If you've ever taken your clothes to a professional dry cleaner, the likelihood that they were cleaned with dangerous chemicals is quite high. Fortunately, there are ways to clean clothes bearing a "Dry Clean Only" label without harming workers, putting toxins into the environment, or bringing dangerous chemicals into your home.

Our Real Money editors examined the options: professional wet cleaning, liquid carbon dioxide cleaning, hydrocarbon cleaning, the so-called "greenearth" method, and more. We give you the low-down on which options are the greenest, summarized on a wallet-sized card (PDF) that you can carry with you."

Now this is decided by the folks that really matter - YOU!  Please vote for Simple! (scroll down to about midway on the page - you'll see!)

Plastic not so Fantastic!

Are you being good & reusing that plastic water bottle? I must admit I am not always on it as frequently as I should myself.

Depending on the type of plastic, these bottles actually leach chemicals. Recycling symbol #1 is only for single-use, and can cause serious health problems if reused or exposed to heat

Are you drinking Bisphenol A (BPA) = Diabetes & Cancer????????

Go check!!!  http://truemors.com/?p=14397

Huge congrats to our homie Al Gore on his shared win of the Nobel Peace Prize.  While it may initially seem a little unusual to award someone like Al for his environmental work, since the prize has traditionally been given to people or groups that have resolved armed conflicts, poverty, hunger, and human rights violations, it is the further reaching effects of his and the IPCC's work to teach people about the effects of man-made climate change and empower them to become part of the solution.  Alfred Nobel's original intention was to award the prize to any person that "promoted fraternity between nations"-- given that the earth is a place we all share, it seems fitting that Al and the IPCC are bringing countries together with a shared vision-- protecting the environment.

Al and Tipper have decided to donate 100% of the 1.5 million dollar prize money to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a bipartisan non-profit that is dedicated to bringing awareness to global climate change.

Dan Price goes Carbon Zero!

Hobopedal_2

Hey Everyone

Our good friend and hobo-scribe Dan Price (you might know him from his Moonlight Chronicles magazine/journal or the cool drawings on our website, boxes, catalogs, t-shirts, etc). Instead he'll take mass transit, train hop, terra trike, walk and other forms of public transportation to get around. With the rising costs of gasoline (it may fluctuate - but trust me folks, the average works to be up up and up), and the obvious concerns of global warming all of us are looking into new ways to change the way we live our lives and do our business to be less harmful. We are in an era of figuring out how to go about this whole sustainability shift and we applaud Dan for his bold move to go zero!

Check out what the Carbon Zero project is all about from the hobo himself , just click.

Check back here and Dan's Blog for updates on how getting around without a car, and living without other gas powered devices in the U.S.  goes.

Good luck dan!

Simple Kid

Simplekid_2jpg Happy Rocktober

It's time for me to take a break from my job as shoe-marketer to talk more about what I love - MUSIC.

We are doing a contest with a great singer/songwriter - "the Simple Kid" - no relation, and no he was not paid mega bucks by this shoe brand name or anything - just a coincidence. I best heard the SImple Kid described as an "irish beck" which probably makes him 10x larger.

You can sign up for a chance to win some Simple Kid schwag and a pair of ecoSNEAKS!

Most importantly - you can listen to the Kids new album "2" by clicking here

-the grizz

Check out the contest here - which lasts until October 12.

Also visit his website for tour info and other 'kid' news.
