Kokua - how a festival can be more green...

Got back home earlier this week from a great weekend in Waikiki Oahu for a weekend of sustainable education, philanthropy, and of course – great music.

Dscn0372_2 The Kokua Festival has come along way in its 5 year run, and as a former concert promoter myself I was really impressed with the thought of bringing sustainability into the festival experience. Can you imagine how much progress we’d make if as much thought that went into greening the Kokua Festival went into greening every event, organization, etc?

DUDE IT WORKED!

Freebeer_3 So our friends from New Belgium saw the ad we ran in Rolling Stone  and sent us some cases of our favorite organic beer; Mothership Wit. It's an organic wheat beer, and like all of their brews, its freakin' good!  I think you can pick it up at Whole Foods. Call us ad-whores or beer sluts, we could care because now we have an excuse to have a bbq in Monica's brand new backyard and spring is here in Santa Barbara!

If the ad doesn't help sell more ecoSNEAKS, at least we can say our advertising budget does produce some results (one way or another).

BOOYEAH - thanks new belgium!

And yes lawyers - everyone employed at Simple is over 21. :)

Happy Earth Day

Simpleearthdaynewsletter42208_3

Hi Everybody

If you are not on our email list, you missed our Earth Day focused newsletter, but here it is...

Did you know that Earth Day was started in our lovely home town of Santa Barbara! It all happened after this nasty oil spill in 1969 the harbor that ended up being one of the first environmental disasters that the major media picked up on. It lead to a chain reaction of events lead by Senator Gaylord Nelson.  Don't believe me? Ask Wikipedia.

Don't have an Earth Day resolution? You can implement Monica's if you'd like.

are we in your 'hood this Earth Day weekend?

Earth_day_2008 Hello

Even if you are not in Hawaii for Kokua, there will be plenty of celebrating Earth Day all over the country. Here are some of the places your friends at Simple will be. Come say hello.

Also, tell us about your Earth Day Resolution today.

See you out there

aloha

Poster_thumb_2 In celebration for Earth Day, your friends at Simple are stoked to be partnering for the 5th Kokua Festival in Oahu Hawaii. Hosted and headlined by Jack Johnson, the festival supports the Kokua Hawaii Foundation who does some incredible work bringing green education and organic farming to the schools in Hawaii. There is a really impressive lineup this year!  Out of all of concerts on my list, I have yet to have seen a Dave and Tim show (but Rachel has!).  The Kokua Festival is a leading example of how concerts can actively reduce their footprint.  That means no water bottles (bring your own container, is it really such a hassle?), no plastics, and almost zero waste. There will also be a showcase of other eco-friendly vendors, advocacy groups like the Defend Oahu Coalition, and of course some sweet rock 'n roll.  We are flattered to be invited to be apart of this great event, and as a shoe company we are committed to make the essence of Kokua year round as well. If you happen to be at the festival, swing by and say hello to Chris or myself at our booth.

Ah warm and fuzzy.

What are you doing for Earth Day? You can sign up for Jack's new eco-social network All at Once and be connected and informed with others who share you concerns about the environment.

meet SB local Alex Hauck

Alex_022 Alex Hauck is one of our friends in the water, and on land. Not only is he an amazingly talented young athlete and artist, he naturally expels clean style, good vibes and the coolness we all love to see. When he’s not hitting the books or the surf, you can bet to find him throwing down progression sessions on his new mini ramp or lifeguarding this summer on any one of gorgeous state beaches along the Gaviota coast.

With a sly'er than average nickname of “dirty bird” and several NSSA wins in the Longboard division under his belt that include back to back championships, Alex is definitely a threat in the water in competition.  We look forward to working with Alex as our future progresses along with his and are totally stoked to have him on board as a friend and Simple team rider for the Green Toe lifestyle.

*from and special thanks guest blogger Stephen who works in product development - he is really good a putting our wear-test shoes to the test. You never know a guy that can beat up some shoes until you met Stephen.

over a million strong...

Sgw_retire_tan_wThis Earth Day your friend at Simple are stoked to present 2008's special edition StopGlobalWarming.org collection. Brand new our SGW.org ecoSNEAKS - made with hemp, recycled car tires, and organic cotton.  StopGlobalWarming.org was started by Laurie David, Robert F. Kennedy Jr, Senator John McCain and many others to empower individuals and organizations to say something to the effect of  - "hey, we are sorta freaked out about this global warming crap and we need to do something about it." At the time of this blog posting 1,054,231 virtual marchers are voicing their concerns about climate change and the disaster we humans are causing, but could overturn.

We are donating $5 for every pair of StopGlobalWarming.org shoes we sell at SimpleShoes.com to the Virtual March on Washington.

By the way, Earth Day is coming up quick! What are you doing? Haven't decided? Haven't even thought about it? That's okay, you can start now.

Sandpaperbig

We're gearing up for Earth Day here in the office (Rachel is actually taking a poll for our online email blast) and it got me thinking... do you do anything special on Earth Day (or every day for that matter)?  And I mean other than carpool or riding your bike to work...

hugs,
cielo
