In all of our attention to our shoes, we realize we've neglected something-- what to do with your shoes once you're done with them.
Sure, you could just toss them in the trashcan once you're done with them and live with the guilt for an eternity, or you could get creative and try out our recommendations below:
If your shoes are still usable and nice (ie not stinky/dirty and walking on their own or repelling animals):
1. Donate them to your local thrift store or shelter. Remember-- someone should be OK with wearing these again... spare them your nasty shoes so they don't wind up in the Thrift Store's garbage bins-- which defeats the whole point.
2. Take a look at Soles4Soles and drop them off with a participating location so someone, somewhere will be able to get a few more miles out of your shoes.
If your shoes are totally nasty or if you want to see them reused:
1. Send them in to Nike* or drop them off at a participating location... where your old kicks will get turned into a playground, running track, or basketball court (seriously). Nike has an excellent "reuse-a-shoe" program they are calling Let Me PLAY that you can read about here. Keep in mind their limitations on what they can accept (no metal, dress shoes, or cleats).
A lot of our shoes actually do have metal eyelets on the eyestays, but you can punch them out and send the shoes on their way to get reincarnated to something a bit more useful.
If you have other ideas we should include here, speak up! Let us know... we're constantly trying to make things better and we know we can't do this all on our own.
hugs,
cielo
